PGL is rich in history! On October 1, 1935, the Ramapo Heights Corporation, founded by Senator and NY State Park Commissioner Robert H. Gittins, set out to develop a unique private community, just south of Tuxedo Park, which was already known for its private sanctity.
The owners of the 225 acres of unimproved land in Sloatsburg, originally known as Ramapo Mountain Lakes, transformed into the Ramapo Heights Club, intended to be a private preserve that existed until 1939. The Ramapo Heights Corporation excavated and constructed the two lakes that we now know as Pine Grove Lake and Mirror Lake.
On August 4, 1939, the Heights Club idea was abandoned and Gittins created what we have today as our Declaration, executing the property to the bylaws homeowners are deeded and abide to today. These conditions include ensuring preservation of the common properties and initiated the idea of forming the non-profit association.
The groundbreaking ceremony was on February 23, 1939 and development and sale of homes started. Many architecturally experimental homes were retreats to individuals who looking for an escape from Manhattan, but the neighborhood also expanded on year-round homes. The neighborhood still held the name Ramapo Heights. On September 15, 1948 Ramapo Heights was sold to real estate developer Irving Maidman of Suffern, New York, for $60,000!
On November 7, 1951, the Association of Property Owners at Pine Grove Lakes, Inc. was formed. A real estate agent, Edward Senft, purchased all of the remaining undeveloped land on March 25, 1958 and in 1961, On January 31, 1961, he amended the original Declarations to elect most the first PGL Board of Trustees and turned the control over to the residents.
Many paper roads were deemed unusable and Mr. Senft sold everything eventually by 1976. The Village of Sloatsburg was dedicated the roads and they pave and maintain.
